(21/2/2010)  CK29 hopes for good sales

Again, CK29 has undertaken to provide this very practical service this year to the parishioners by setting up a stall in the church foyer during the weeks running up to Confirmation and First Holy Communion. The parishioners are able to purchase Rosary Beads, Prayer Books, rosettes, holy water bottles and cards etc. all at very reasonable prices. Any profits made from these sales goes directly into projects undertaken by CK29.
Photo shows Bro. Michael & Bro. Leo manning the stall.

(3/9/2009)  GK Pat Doyle walks the Camino of Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela, a city in Galicia, north-west Spain has long been the focus for a pilgrimage as it is reputed that there lie the remains of St. James the Apostle. They were apparently taken there after he was decapitated in Rome.

Many thousands of pilgrims walk the Camino each year. It starts out on the French/Spanish border in the Pyrenees and winds its way through northern Spain for some 800 kms.

Needless to say, my wife, my sister & her husband & I did not attempt this epic journey, just the last 112 km (70 mls) section from a town called Sarria.

Over six days we walked from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela through beautiful countryside and with a great camaraderie with the other pilgrims - mostly Spanish.

Nevertheless our walk was arduous enough. It was compensated by being able to visit some beautiful churches and meeting some wonderful people, like a retired Canadian doing the complete 800 kms for his 5th time - that put some to shame!

Our journey's end was the very large cathedral in Santiago de Compostela - a magnificent church. We were lucky enough to be there for the high Mass on Sunday 30th Aug where the thurible flew! This thurible stands about 3 ft high and is lit in front of the altar after Mass. It is then hoisted in the air by 8 men pulling a long rope and swung across the church - see attached link to You Tube - this will give you a sense of it, but it's something else to see it live.

I would urge any of you to take up this challenge - Kate & I are not what you would call "hardened walkers", so if we could do it, so could you.

We found it to be a wonderful experience, time to think & pray. The feet are less sore now.

Bro. Pat
