(21/2/2010)  CK29 hopes for good sales

Again, CK29 has undertaken to provide this very practical service this year to the parishioners by setting up a stall in the church foyer during the weeks running up to Confirmation and First Holy Communion. The parishioners are able to purchase Rosary Beads, Prayer Books, rosettes, holy water bottles and cards etc. all at very reasonable prices. Any profits made from these sales goes directly into projects undertaken by CK29.

(3/9/2009)  GK Pat Doyle walks the Camino of Santiago de Compostela

Santiago de Compostela, a city in Galicia, north-west Spain has long been the focus for a pilgrimage as it is reputed that there lie the remains of St. James the Apostle. They were apparently taken there after he was decapitated in Rome.

Many thousands of pilgrims walk the Camino each year. It starts out on the French/Spanish border in the Pyrenees and winds its way through northern Spain for some 800 kms.

Needless to say, my wife, my sister & her husband & I did not attempt this epic journey, just the last 112 km (70 mls) section from a town called Sarria.

Over six days we walked from Sarria to Santiago de Compostela through beautiful countryside and with a great camaraderie with the other pilgrims - mostly Spanish.

Nevertheless our walk was arduous enough. It was compensated by being able to visit some beautiful churches and meeting some wonderful people, like a retired Canadian doing the complete 800 kms for his 5th time - that put some to shame!

Our journey's end was the very large cathedral in Santiago de Compostela - a magnificent church. We were lucky enough to be there for the high Mass on Sunday 30th Aug where the thurible flew! This thurible stands about 3 ft high and is lit in front of the altar after Mass. It is then hoisted in the air by 8 men pulling a long rope and swung across the church - see attached link to You Tube - this will give you a sense of it, but it's something else to see it live.

I would urge any of you to take up this challenge - Kate & I are not what you would call "hardened walkers", so if we could do it, so could you.

We found it to be a wonderful experience, time to think & pray. The feet are less sore now.

Bro. Pat

(13/2/2009)  Top night out - Annual Ten Pin Bowling event

There's no doubt about it, CK29 know how to enjoy themselves when they are let loose in the Belfast Odyssey.
One by one they started falling, and I'm not referring to the skittles, I am referring to the players...injuries were rife, from damaged wrists to the more serious ragged finger nails!
Aside from the injuries a very competitive game ensued and it would be wrong of me to say who had the best score on the night...I'm far too modest to say!
After the Ten Pin Bowling, CK29 again excelled themselves in the Red Panda Chinese Restaurant, every last morcel of food was polished off.
Sponsored diets by some of our members might well be a future project for the Council this year.

  (30/12/2008)  CK29 Christmas Scene – Schools Project - St. Ita's P.S. winner's

This year CK29 used an idea from a Brother Knight from Canada to engage with local primary & secondary schools. The idea was simple – kids (11-14 yrs old) at Our Lady & St. Pat’s Grammar School (OLSPK), Knock took part in a competition to create the best Christmas scene, in outline form.

The winning entry from OLSPK was then sent to our two local primary schools, St. Josephs & St. Itas and kids (5 – 8 yrs old) competed to create the best coloured version of it.

CK29 sponsored prizes at both schools and the winners were as follows:

OLSPK
Runners-up: Sean McGarrigle, Sarah McGrath, Clare Hughes, Benjamin Ferran & Claire McGinnity

Year Group Winners: Aisling O’Hare & Rory Doherty

Overall Winner: Ellen Fitzpatrick

Picture shows GK Pat Doyle presenting first prize to Bronagh Maguire, Joanne Browne, School Principal, Frances Maguire,Teacher, Ryan Lavery, second prize winner and Oliver McKee, Teacher.

CK29 would hope to make this an annual project to engage with our younger parishioners.
